Sandpipers: Bunyan's Cove

This work was inspired by a visit to Bunyan's Cove, NL one hot summer afternoon. The calm blue waters of Newman Sound provided a clear reflection of the sea stack on the distant beach. A pair of spotted sandpipers scurried along the beach, frequently stopping to dab their beaks in the sand.

 The shapes for the hanging were cut freehand from poly-cotton material and machine-appliqued to a layer of polyester batting and a backing of 100% cotton. Touches of hand embroidery provided details to enhance the irises and sandpipers. Tufts of burlap add detail and texture in representing the stems of dried grasses.
